Best account of this is Skunkworks by Ben R. Rich. He was commissioned by USAF in the 50s to investigate the feasibility of hydrogen powered jets. It was abandoned because hydrogen is impossible to contain. The idiots today would save billions by just reading Rich's $10 paperback memoir.
