The Ancient Greek would say "we Hellenes are free men; Barbarians are slaves". It means being ruled by a public Law which respects your rights. You are the member of a state and not the subject of an individual despot. We've become slaves to moral panics invented by the media - I'm not sure what the greeks would have thought of us !
